My life has forever been changed because I went to the Ukraine with a Summer Mission Team. I am not exaggerating when I say that I think about the Ukraine every day.
That is why I want to let you know that Summer Mission Team applications should be completed—including references—and submitted to THQ by January 17th, 2007. That is only 30 days from today! If you are interested in being a part of this life-changing experience, start filling out the application today.
They are looking for active, uniform wearing Salvationists (ages 16-28) to assist The Salvation Army in sharing the gospel next summer. They will be sending team members to locations around the world and within the Central Territory. If you want an application please click here for more information.
Completing the application may be a bit awkward. It’s always hard to “sell yourself” but as someone who has sat on the SMT committee let me stress that appearance counts. So, do yourself a favor and type out your application, put some thought into it and get to the heart of the matter. Your references are also very important, be sure to choose responsible mentors who really know you and will be faithful to submit their recommendation on time. And if you really want to prove how responsible you are TURN YOUR APPLICATION EARLY!
I hope you are well.
Grace, Eric Himes Ukraine, Australia, Germany/Lithuania Summer Mission Team Alum (U.A.G/L.S.M.T.A)
P.S. if for whatever reason you are not selected as a Summer Mission Team member, chances are that we would love to have you be a part of Band of Survivors, a month long Missions/Discipleship School. BOS 2K6 runs from June 26 – July 23. Applications will be out in January.
P.P.S. if you are not interested in SMT or Band of Survivors you may want to work at camp. It’s an awesome job and they have a pool. Email me or go to http://wonderlandcamp.com if you want more information.
The Singing Company Christmas Musical…IS HERE!
Friday, December 15, 2006
This morning UPS delivered a bit of Christmas cheer. 1037 copies of The Singing Company Christmas Musical arrived at DHQ.
How can you get a copy of this Christmas EP?
Well, if you are a Metro youth that took part in I’ll Fight Day a copy is on it’s way to your Corps with your name on it. Ask your Corps Officer about it next week (after Monday). We made this album for you. Thanks for being a part of I’ll Fight Day!
If you’re on the Central Territory Student Fellowship roster—you would know this because you get monthly packages from THQ in the mail (last month was a Relevant Magazine. Remember?)—you’ll get a copy in the mail sometime next week. The THQ Youth Department was awesome in supporting this project.
Not a Metro I’ll Fight Day participant or Central Territory Student Fellowship member? Go to SAYTunes.com and download the album for yourself. Much love goes out to Fulton Hawk for doing the album design for this CD. Speaking of love…give us a good review while you’re checking us out on SAYTunes. Click here to hear and download the songs.
You can also listen to the album, download sheet music and purchase the Christmas Musical for $5 on The Singing Company website. They’ll also be sold at Urbana. Holla!
Merry Christmas! And now for a celebratory self-photo shoot!
I’ll Fight Day Report
Wednesday, December 13, 2006
I have heard many great reports about I’ll Fight Day. I’m going to post them here as soon as all of them come in. Let me just say this: I am very proud of every one of you. You guys exceeded my expectations.
I can’t wait to share what everyone else did. I’m waiting on the last Corps to get back to me. Stay tuned…
I'm glad you guys could be a part of I'll Fight Day. If you could write me a brief description of what your Corps did on I'll Fight Day that would be great.
Please also be sure to write down a list of all the youth from your Corps that participated in I'll Fight Day so I can get them a copy of The Singing Company Christmas Musical.
Chicago Public School Christmas Assemblies 2006
Friday, December 08, 2006
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, 40 Salvationists (mostly CFOT Cadets and DHQ Officers) broke into seven teams and went to 27 Chicago Public Schools to perform Christmas assemblies. We talked to over 9000 children about the Spirit of Christmas during these presentations and had a lot of fun. We sang X-mas songs about fictitious reindeer, snowmen and an old man who knows when you are awake, pouting, crying or asleep. We also had puppets.
Each year we take part in this “ministry of presence.” God continues to bless these efforts and open unique doors for The Salvation Army.
Want to hear some of the brand new Singing Company Christmas Musical?
Go to SAYTunes.com to hear 3 of the 5 songs from the upcoming Christmas Musical EP. All five songs will be given to Metropolitan youth that participate in Saturday’s I’ll Fight Day…
Also, if you get the chance, consider showing The Singing Company some love by giving us a good vote.
Stuff You Should Know To Make I’ll Fight Day A Success…
Wednesday, December 06, 2006
1. Deep down non-Christians really want to know and obey God.
2. Non-Christians typically have five or more significant encounters with the gospel before coming into a relationship with Jesus Christ.
3. Non-Christians usually won’t come to us to find God. We have to go to them.
4. Evangelism is the easiest and most natural of all the ministries in the church.
5. Effective evangelism requires little training.
6. Friendly, openhearted people make the best evangelists.
7. Church life, spent in the presence of Christians only, produces saints who are neither friendly nor openhearted to outsiders.
8. The kingdom of God is the primary mission and issue of our shared life as Christians, not self-preservation or the perpetuation of a church.
9. The primary foundation of all our evangelism is love.
10. Placing expectations upon someone we’re evangelizing is always injurious and works against that person coming to Christ.
11. We become holy and righteous by identifying with Jesus and surrendering to his will for us rather than trying to obey the law.
12. Each person in relationship with Jesus is primarily responsible for his or her own follow-up and fellowship needs.
13. The Holy Spirit is the only true evangelist who has ever existed, as well as the only disciple-maker.
14. It is normal for everyone who loves Jesus to have a heart for the poor, sick, lost, widowed, and homeless.
15. We are committed to prayer as an essential element of any successful outreach venture. Because we highly value active obedience to the will of God, an ideal time to pray is on the way to share God’s love with others.
16. Non-Christians may not remember what they’ve been told regarding God’s love, but they always remember what they’ve experienced of God’s love.
17. None of us can manufacture the genuine working of the Holy Spirit.
18. The Holy Spirit is able, willing, and free to break in and carry on his work in unspectacular, non-manipulative, and surprising ways.
19. An atmosphere of anointing, freshness, and vitality comes upon believers when they spend time with non-Christians.
20. Because of irrational fears, the average evangelical Christian today has no plans to participate actively in evangelism.
21. Most Christians are so far out of touch with the world around them that they know little of its fears, problems, concerns, or issues.
22. Because God is highly committed to the lost, almost any evangelistic approach will work given enough time and commitment to sharing the good news.
23. God has a passionate heart to the lost. Whether we choose to bring Christ to unbelievers or not, God is very creative and will always seek to win them in some way.
24. It is a privilege to be involved in the process of sharing God’s love with those he is inviting into the family of God.
25. Effective evangelism is more of a mindset and paradigm than a program.
26. Our evangelism is really an overflow of our relationship with God and our relationship with people.
27. In order to effectively evangelize our cities, we will need to make major time commitments to sharing our lives with the lost. In fact, God may ask us to dedicate the rest of our lives to the task of reaching our cities with the gospel.
28. The value of evangelism will regularly conflict with day to day programs of church life.
29. Because they are central to the mission of the local church, funding for evangelism and ministry to the poor ought to be seen as a part of the regular church budget rather than areas to be financed by special offerings.
Comments compiled by Doug Murren, Doug Roe, and Steve Sjogren and found in Conspiracy of Kindness: A Refreshing New Approach to Sharing the Love of Jesus, Regal Press 2003.
Metro youth who participate in I’ll Fight Day will receive a limited edition copy of The Singing Company Christmas Musical as a token of our appreciation. You must provide a list of names of those who participated in the event to receive a copy of the CD. (We only have a limited amount of these CDs; they are first come first served).
